Chapter 1 Look Inside

Chris’ skin crawled. The sheet covering him felt like it was infested with ants. He twitched. Everything in this dimly lit, unfamiliar bedroom added to his irritation. He had to fight the instinct to tear out of that apartment and run screaming down the hall. This need to escape was visceral. Like when a racehorse was penned in at the gate just before the starting bell went off. He needed to go. Now.
The woman sleeping peacefully beside him let out a loud snore. At least she was sound asleep, he thought, carefully sliding first one leg, then the other off the bed. He sat up slowly and looked back. The sheet had pulled away with his movement and exposed her tan back and the top of her bottom. It was perfection. A day’s beard growth stung his hands as he rubbed his face and stood up. The woman—was her name Noreen?—shifted in bed, long blond hair tumbling back over the pillow. Noreen, or maybe it was Norma… It didn’t matter, they were all the same: beautiful, blonde, and boring. He’d tried having a conversation with the last one, but it had been a disaster. Chris shook his head at the memory. What was it she had said when he told her he was from Australia? You speak real good English for being from a foreign country? Yes, that had been it. At least she had been a good lay, he thought, stepping into his pants.
But each time, with each new woman something kept nagging at him. They weren’t Corinna. They didn’t pique his interest the way she had. Although she had lied to him and ultimately was only interested in his vast fortune, she held a special place in his heart. None of these women had her conniving qualities or ruthless nature. For some reason, he had found that highly attractive. She had said that in the future she would consider dating him again, once she got her life together. But he had heard through the grapevine that she was seeing Whitford Chamberlin III. So he guessed that was that.
Rather than spending winter in Australia, his least favorite season, he opted for summer in sunny Southern California. Much to the chagrin of his father who had wanted him back after Chris had secured a major deal with a company in New York. But he just couldn’t handle it. The family pressure to get in line and settle down was too great. Especially after being dumped. Actually, he had been ready to go home when he thought of bringing Corinna with him, but not now. He was the baby in a family of six, and thus had been afforded some major slack his siblings hadn’t. Still, all his siblings were happily settled down. He just felt like he didn’t fit in anymore, or have anything to talk to them about other than business. Which really sucked.
Of course, he was still working while he was here. He couldn’t shirk his duties completely, but at least he was in Los Angeles. The surf was great, the weather perfect, and the women plentiful. They were also very willing and mostly didn’t seem too bothered when he ghosted after a date or two.
Chris softly shut the front door and made his way along the pebble-covered walkway toward the street. He admired the mid-century modern architecture as he went. The kidney shaped pool at the center of the courtyard was a nice touch. Very L.A. The patch of sky visible was overcast. What did the locals call it? June gloom? He chuckled. Americans, they had a slogan for everything.
He straddled the vintage red motorbike he had found showcased in the window of a Beverly Hills showroom when he first arrived. It was beautiful, and great at getting around traffic. Chris went to push his wavy sun-bleached hair back before putting on his helmet, forgetting that he’d had a close crop just a day ago. It was easier to take care of, and right now, all he wanted in his life was easy.
